Millertime! on the Music Scene
Wow! We really scored a great adventure the other day on the bay! The tide was just coming in around sunset and since Sue and I had both put in a long day “at the office”, we were both ready for some water time. So we launched around dusk for a paddle out to the sandspit. Sue said we should bring lights for our kayaks since we may be paddling after dark.
Dang! Sometimes, it’s so difficult to keep your Groove on when the world seems to be falling apart right before your eyes. Huge fires were raging in California and the virus doesn’t seem to be diminishing, in fact getting worse.
When KSBY told us about the Neowise comet that was passing by us a while ago, Sue and I decided we just had to see it. We were lucky enough to see that rocket launch from Vandenberg last year that blew up the sky with radical colors and shapes it was totally awesome! So we expected a great show in the sky this time too. Unfortunately, the Baywood fog was hovering around a few nights and we couldn’t see a thing.
Without a dance floor and live music we’re having a difficult time keeping our Groove on. I’ve been wearing out all my favorite You Tube bands.
Although the Music Cares videos with Keith Richards and the Doobie Brothers are fantastic to watch, it’s amazing how they got everyone from all parts of the world together to jam on one tune. It’s really awesome.
Staying in the Groove has been a real challenge lately. The spike in the virus is so scary. I haven’t even been to downtown SLO for three months, I used to go see Tripped Up or True Zion at the Frog and Peach, but no more.
Concerts in the Plaza, Ramona Park, Avila Beach for Stick Figure and Pepper, Slightly Stoopid. Man, what happened?
Even the Mother Corn Shuckers had to cancel gigs at Port San Luis Lighthouse and a number of events. So now I play guitar at Central Coast Music (when I’m working at In the Groove) and at the ‘Clubhouse’ in Baywood Park (shhh it’s not really a clubhouse!).
We have learned to adapt to the stay at home order, but getting outside for exercise is encouraged by all the experts. Luckily my friend, Sue, and I have been hiking and biking to stay In the Groove.
We launched from Baywood pier and rode bikes out to Sea Pines golf course into the Monarch housing track. There is a sweet trail through the Eucalyptus trees out behind hole number 4 green or number 5 tee box.
We decided to take a break at a bench which was located in a big circle of trees. Lo and behold we looked at the bench and a sign said something like “Thank you Sue for providing this beautiful bench!”
What a strange feeling to see normally bustling towns and cities like ghost towns. A total bummer for sure.
But if you’re like me, I sometimes really get a kick out of having the place to myself, so to speak. Meaning uncrowded waves, an empty restaurant with a window seat, a road with no other cars on it, an empty movie theater, etc.
It’s so scary when it’s a city or county or national order to stay at home. But we on the Central Coast are so blessed to have ‘space’ between us… naturally.
We are doing what they suggest: “staying away from people.” Yuck, what fun is that? I thought social distancing was when you avoided an event/party where you might run into an ex girlfriend! Baywood and surrounding communities can hardly operate this way, but the Governor of New York had some really nice things to say about getting household projects done…
Wow what a crazy time we live in! Before the virus hit, the Mother Corn Shuckers were booked at the Merrimaker in beautiful downtown Baywood Park. They purposely adjusted the date so we wouldn’t conflict with Shooter Jennings at the Siren and Robert Earl Keen at the Fremont.
The Siren in Morro Bay was the last man standing for entertainment on the Central Coast as of Sunday afternoon.
The Sunday jazz jam - hosted by my good friend Tracy Morgan - was epic this week!
The Siren in Morro Bay provides a great forum for local talent to shine… and shine they did!
Wayne on keys, Travis on bass, the baddest dudes with chops and ears!
Aloha from beautiful downtown Baywood Park, California.
Yesterday was a great musical day on the Central Coast… as are most days.
Last Monday was O’ Donna at Beer at the Pier which was a great time plenty of dancing and the usual love emitted from Jose and his wonderful family at La Palapa.
Inquiring minds want to know!!
Now that Beer at the Pier has become a weekly event in Baywood Park…
Who played the first one and how did it start?
That’s easy, it was me!
Keeping “In The Groove” with outdoor activities is turning out to be such a blessing. I never thought being in a pandemic would turn out to be one of the healthiest things that has happened to me. My friend, Sue, has been a real proponent of exploring new hikes and trails. I am stoked to have shown her some of my favorite hikes and trails in Montana De Oro State Park.
